I remember so many stories and occasions with Al. He was one of my best friends. We had so many times that we were just busting up laughing and we (Al, Elaine and I) were always together. There are so many trips whether for skiing, hiking or sightseeing, it is hard to break out an individual event that is the best. They were all good times.
One trip that was great for all of us was when we visited the British Virgin Islands. We rented a sail boat and traveled from island to island and we were mostly by ourselves without others in most of the places that we visited. We saw so many interesting sites and the skin diving was unbelievable. I do remember the first night we drank and ate so much that Al ended up falling overboard and off the front of the boat. I think he was also given a love push by Elaine as well. Well, he had to swim all the way to the back of the boat to get back onboard. Needless to say, we were all slow the next day. It was a trip to remember forever.
What I admired most about Al was his devotion to Elaine and I image his kids. I remember there courtship and the many attempts before Elaine finally decide to give in and marry him. I remember it well because after each attempt he and I would end up down at the buzzer, Manhattan Beach Brewery, drinking his sorrows away. Elaine was a tough one to crack. I remember after attempt number 3 that Al had said that he was giving up and that Elaine was looking for somebody taller. I don't think I have laughed harder in my life. I remember we were on our 4th pitcher of beer when John and Ae joined us and we continued to plow through the beer. Elaine and one of here friends were dancing across the street and they came over to join us. I just remember that Al just ignored them and when they left he was so upset that we did not leave until we had many more pitchers of beer. I think it took a couple of months that I saw them together again. This time I think it was Elaine that engaged Al instead of the other way around. I think she finally figured out how unique and nice that Al really was (or maybe it was the sledge hammer). After that I never saw them apart.
Al was truly a special person and I will never forget him. Elaine will miss him immensely but she will always be welcome to stay with me even without Al. Godspeed to you my buddy Al Marshall.

To Elaine, Alex and Ian,
I’m heartbroken to learn of Al’s sudden passing . We met you all when the kids were young and playing together and have memories of how kind and welcoming you were. We would intermittently see Al riding his bike, coming out of Wegmans, or at Willow Bank. He was always so friendly and up for a chat. Please accept our sympathy and condolences.
Fondly, Kathy, Steve and Alex Dubin

To all of Al's family and friends. We are so sorry for your loss. To say that Al was special is an understatement. The outpouring of love and respect from all who had the privilege of knowing him has been impressive. Although he was taken way to early, the impact he had will be long lasting. We will miss him. Al (or “Bert” as I liked to call him) had a huge impact on my life over the 50 years that we have known each other. We lived across the street from each other from about 1973 until he went off to college in 1980 but those seven years seemed like a lifetime. I think I met him when he hit me in the back with a canvas bag full of parts for a steam engine he was building. We went on to spend countless hours in his basement building that steam engine, cross bows, snow sleds (for “Kimo” the malamute husky that lived next door to pull us around town), speakers (for listening to Rush even louder), snow forts (yes, that scar under his left eye was from me when he said “throw me that shovel” while I was in the fort and his face was in the doorway), more cross bows, and whatever else his brilliant mind thought of. This may be the reason I became a Mechanical Engineer like him. He was my first boss when he started delivering newspapers and I offered to help him out. We spent hours in his room on collection day stacking bills with the heads all pointed the same direction and filling coin rolls after first putting stacks of four quarters in ten piles before we could load them into the rolls. We had to look at the edge of every quarter and loved finding a silver quarter from 1964 or before! He always delivered the paper to the scary house with the German Shepard! During high school we spent hours driving his grandmother’s lime green Volkswagen Rabbit around the back roads outside town. He rode all of those roads on his bike during the day and knew where every road would end up. I still can’t believe his mom and dad let us glue topographic maps on an entire wall in the house so he could plan his next ride! When he graduated from college and moved to California he recommended me for an internship and I still live there today. Al was truly my big brother with a huge impact on everything I am today and I can’t believe he is gone so soon.

Very sorry for sudden loss of Al, I don't recall if I met him at work or outside of work first, but I always enjoyed the brief hallway conversation or time spent on the ski hill with Al.
I know he was well respected by peers and customers in his area of expertise in developing Air Traffics systems.
Al will live on in the memories of him on his bicycle, on a sailboat or on the ski slopes enjoying nature, life and family and friends
RIP Al!

I am so sorry to hear of Al´s much too early passing.
He was a great contribution to the Sysat team, helping to improve air traffic management in France and elsewhere in the world!
His work will continue to make travel safer and more efficient for flight passengers and airport staffs.
On behalf of the Swedish Sysat team for Integrated Air Traffic Management, I would like to express our condolences to his near and dear ones.

I don't know what direction my life would've taken had I not met Al at that sailing course back in the early 70's, but I suspect it would not have been anywhere near as fun. Al was the epitome of a best friend who often dragged me, sulking and complaining, into living life rather than just existing. Hugs to family and friends.

Al epitomized the strong, silent, worker-bee type. He was the first to roll up his sleeves to pitch in to get a job done. He was a great competitor who remained calm and in control at all times. He was unfailingly kind and pleasant. He made the lives of his fellow sailors brighter. Who could ask for more?

Our prayers go out to Al's Family in his early passing.
We all will miss Al so much --- he was one of the first people we met when we joined the Willow Bank and was one of my favorite member because he was always friendly and accepting. I always was amazed how good he was at getting the dock in and out each year and how he improved the process each year. Beyond being Commodore I know he went way beyond in his time and ideas to make sure the club ran smoothly.

I was lucky to have worked with Al for several years. He was a role model of professionalism who paid attention to detail and was a relentless advocate for getting things right up front to prevent downstream disasters. He was kind, had a great sense of humor, and kept a cool head in touchy situations. I will miss him but I won’t forget him. ❤️

I found this photo of Al on my mother's dresser (Al's Aunt Barclay) - It's initialed and dated LM - 1964 - likely taken by Aunt Linda at the family house, "Back Acre". I had many happy summer visit's to Caz, hunting for fossils in the creek behind the house and riding tucked on one side of the centerboard trunk in Rush's Finn with Al tucked in on the other side. In another photo, Al is standing as a young adult beside his bike on a mountain pass. I'm so sad I'll not get to see him again. My deepest condolences.

I am so saddened to learn of Al’s passing. While I didn’t know Al for a long time, I could tell what a great person he was from how he welcomed me and my family to Willow Banks and Cazenovia. He was quick with a smile and extremely patient with me as I learned about installing/removing the docks. I will miss talking with him at the Willow Banks events. My sincere condolences to his friends and family. We have all lost a great person and he will be sorely missed.

To Al's family and friends, my deepest and heartfelt condolences.
Over the almost 20 years that I knew him, Al was a mentor, a soft-spoken leader, a diligent engineer, and a good friend. He and I shared many stories about Laser sailing (and capsizing), Cazenovia bike rides, and our families. My heart goes out to you.

To the Marshall family and all of Al's friends and loved ones - I am so, so very sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of working with Al for over 15 years at Sensis/Saab. I always enjoyed time spent with Al for his easy way of communicating and making everyone in the room, or on the call, feel as if we were always better as a team. He always had something interesting to share and was a kind, brilliant man. I will miss him.

To Al's family and friends, I am deeply sorry for your loss. Al was a special person and we had the strange relationship whereby we have never met in person, but exchanged many hours of conversation over meetings. I am based in Australia and Al provided incredible support and mentoring to me in systems engineering over the last year. He was precise in his explanations and always careful to make sure I understood. Always happy to help and provide kind and meaningful feedback. The first 15 minutes of our meetings were usually spent exchanging stories about our lives. We would then both begrudgingly agree that we'd better get to work. He took such pride in his family and I remember clearly how proud he was attending his son's graduation last year. Al would laugh at my jokes, exchange stories, jokingly tremble in terror at how quickly I moved the mouse around and interfered with his carefully designed systems and share in the highs and lows of life with a kind and empathetic ear. I was so sorry to hear of his death and I will miss him. May he rest in peace.
Warm regards,
Steph Hughes
