Walt Dabek posted a condolence

When I read about Willie's passing I had rush of thoughts about my him, my cousins—Debbie, Joey, Trisha , Tommy and Paul.—and about Uncle Joe and Aunt Tina and our lives back in NY/Queens and Baldwin--I have posted a picture of them. I remember that big house in Baldwin, where there always seemed to be a ton of people…always around an eating event or holiday. And I remember lots of conversation…some of it loud, but always caring and loving. Uncle Joe was my Godfather and I have special place in my heart for both him and Aunt Tina. But these memories were also about our lives with our grandparents on 87th street…where Willie's grandparents lived , as well.
One event that stands out was a block party on 87th street. At that time I was in a band and we played in the street for this block party. I don't think we got paid…as most musicians we were given a chance to play and we did. And in the crowd were my cousins Willie (called Billy back then) and Debbie. I haven't thought about that event in a long time and life moved us all in different directions and I didn't know to later on that Willie was a prolific writer, performer and artist.
When Uncle Joe died some of us (cousins and my mom) attended the memorial service with Frank Sinatra music playing and then back to the house for some great conversation, lots of laughs, some tears and eventually a competitive game of whiffle ball…between the Kiernan brothers and the Dabek brothers (me and my brother Joe). And here was this quiet, poet/soul, being extremely competitive at really wanting to beat us…apparently something he wanted to do for a long time and they did! Being there brought back a lot of good thoughts and feelings about our family and even though there was a lot years in between, it seemed very natural.
As I read some of the notes it sounds like Willie had a great life, with a loving family and he touched many with his cooking, his music and his person. I hope you find comfort in the life he lead and the lives he touched.

To the Kiernan Family, we are sending our sympathies at the loss of your husband, father, brother etc. While we did not know Willie we knew his parents and especially we knew his brother Paul. We remember what a fun family it was and are sorry that you are experiencing this loss. Paul, to you we send special condolences and concern. May all the wonderful memories of Willie help you through this difficult time.

I had the great privilege of getting to know Willie while we worked together in our first community theater production of The Fantasticks. Willie was such a funny, smart and compassionate person who always talked so adoringly about his family. I will remember him fondly. Sending my deepest sympathy to his family and friends. He will be missed by so many.

Sending love, comfort, and condolences to Terri and the whole family. I am so honored to have had the pleasure of getting to know and work with Willie. He was love, encouragement, imagination, courage, and inspiration personified. Heaven is brighter while the lights on Linklaen St. are dimmer for this loss.

Terri, Jackson, Beezly, Mays, and Siobhan, Willie has given so much to so many different groups of people--with his arts of music and writing, and with his kindness, intelligence, and generosity of spirit. Even recently, we had the most astonishingly wide-ranging conversation, when I called the house to invite your family to Caroline's HS graduation party. What a marvel -- a conversation spanning families, art, science, politics, our local community, the media, the art and science of medicine, and the global climate and environment. He said that day that he felt tired outside but not inside (mind and spirit). My family and I will continue to be grateful for his many gifts that he shared with you, with his many and diverse networks of friends, and of course with our larger community. Love to you all, Cathryn Newton

It was a long time ago when I spent many an hour at Wheatberry in Cazenovia. Sue, Carol, Sherri and all the others provided myself with many good memories. Willie spent most of his time up in back in the hot, hot kitchen creating many a delicious meal for the customers that entered the old building right in the middle of town. Once in a while Willie brought out his guitar and entertained us as well. I played a bit, but was amazed at how well he produced such a pleasant sound from just six strings. I am saddened and surprised at his passing, especially so young in my estimation (I'm 68). Time passes, and people move on and drift apart...but memories remain. Life has many ups and downs, and Willie was an up.

Mr Kiernan, I am deeply sorry to hear of your passing. We did not know one another very well, but your children have meant a lot to me over the years. I'm glad to hear that you provided them with such a loving and nurturing home. For what it's worth, I'll never forget how you ran my three-page story about AD, even though it probably broke about every convention in journalism. Rest in peace. I will be thinking of your family.
