When I thought I had decided to retire from the 174th, I had changed my mind over and over. I mean what better group of people can you have in your life then the "family" you grew up with at the 174th. I struggled with the question should I leave or hang on for a few more years. I asked (then Col) Knauff if he could find some time in his busy schedule to speak with me. He was so very kind and a wonderful leader. He took the time one day to sit down with me for more than an hour to just talk. He talked to me about how much he believed I had accomplished throughout my career. He also talked about how only I will know when it's time, but that sometimes you have to make the decision based on influences outside of the military, like your family and friends. But to also consider the people around you in your job. I remember telling him that one of the reasons I thought it was time to retire was that the longer I stayed, the longer it would be that the great people who I supervised would be "held up" for promotion. I remember him saying that "Warren, I don't think that you should retire just based on the fact that your subordinates have to wait for promotion until you retire or move and a "slot" becomes available". He said, "However, if you find that it's time for you to retire, the doors that you will open up for those around you will be enormous, but I am not telling you to retire just so some of your people can be promoted, don't take what I'm saying the wrong way. But if you decide to retire, someday you can look back and have a wonderful feeling that you have helped the careers of those around you, like you have been doing all along as their supervisor". He further explained that it was not a decision that should be made just because I may have been holding up the promotion possibilities of those people. That I should stay if I want to and that he believed in me and would support me staying on board. It was one of the only times that I had the wonderful opportunity to speak one on one with him. He had supported me many times and had thanked me for things that I and my great coworkers accomplished. We could not have asked for a better Commander than him. When I did decide it was time to retire, Col Knauff was there attending my retirement party. It was so kind of him to take the time to recognize me and spend time talking with my beautiful wife and children. He was a very very special Commander and person. He will continue to be missed.. God Bless him and his family.

I thought the world of Bob Knauff. Not only was he one of the finest aviators that I've ever known, but his constantly tested quick, decisive thinking and smooth hands interfaced with sound judgment inevitably gave the flight members he was leading extreme confidence in what they were doing and the circumstances they were in, whether on the ground or in the air. To say he was competent was a gross understatement. I know that being a great aviator is one of the ways he would have preferred to be most remembered, as he loved everything about the sky, airplanes, and flying. There are old fighter pilots, and there are bold fighter pilots, but there are NO old, bold fighter pilots" or so the adage goes. I disagree; yes there are. He was definitely one, and he was really good at it. He made it through an entire military career unscathed. I don't really know the glider situation, but I can assure you that Bob literally had no options and right up to the end, based on his past performance, he tried desperately to save his life and minimize damage. Bob was in a flight regime from which recovery was impossible.
The Naffster was a role model and trainer for everyone in the Squadron, even his superiors, in his approach, implementation, and follow-through for whatever he attempted. These exceptional skills and traits naturally carried over into everything he did. His leadership had something imbued that few true leaders are blessed with -- and that was understanding and heart. He was respectful and mindful of every single person regardless of rank, and he gained your confidence by already seemingly having walked in your shoes. Full of integrity and old-fashioned honor, he did what was right and what was the best possible outcome for all. I don't know one Squadron mate who didn't love him. I knew him as a 4-ship flight lead and a Major who came from a highly respected F-15 background, and way back then (1986) I knew he was going places that I never would. I knew he was destined to be a Commander, but how significant a commander, I didn't know. I just recently learned that New York rightfully crowned him a Major General with commensurate duties. And I know he performed remarkably well as he climbed the chain of command ladder. He was never a "do as I say" Man, rather a "do as I do" Man. "And follow me into the battle" was his mantra. Like I said and have alluded to throughout, this Man was one of a kind and had my greatest respect.
He was also extremely unique and quite a private individual, but I did know we had our differences: I loved old Corvettes; he loved old Nashes. I had children; I don't think he had any. But then again, we had our similarities: Cancer touched both of our lives, mine in a positive way, his in a negative way. I survived Stage IV cancer while both of his wives unfortunately succumbed, for which I am so extremely sorry. But I know they were both blessed by his presence. I can't be there for Bob's viewing, funeral, and internment, but I wanted his next of kin to know what a special, great guy he was.
I still to this day get a giant kick out of periodically looking at my F-16 retirement photo on which my Squadron buddies wrote their best wishes for a successful retirement: Bob's comment to me still launches out from the photograph, "To a 'Quality' Guy, Best Wishes for the Future, Bob Knauff."
Ditto, Dude! We loved you.

My sincerest condolences to Gen Knauff's family and friends. I had the privilege of working with him on the FAA UAS project over the last several years. He was an amazing leader who provided his guidance and wisdom that led to our success. This project will move forward as part of his legacy. His exceptional integrity and humor were appreciated by all who met him. We shared animal and pet stories often. Words are inadequate to describe his love and devotion for Tara. We will miss him so very much and remember him often.

It was with great shock and sadness that Audrey and I heard of the accident while out of the country. Bob and I planned to meet in Aguila when he first arrived, but a breakdown in Oklahoma delayed him enough so that I had to leave before he got there. We agreed to put off our meeting until this summer in New York. Now family medical matters will keep me in Arizona during his services. He was a wonderful man, great friend and outstanding officer. We shared nonfiction books (I still have some of his on my bookshelf), rooms when TDY or at a NGAUS convention, and a love for a good intellectual “discussion”. His humor was dry; his love for Kathy and Tara was total. He grieved mightily at their passing as I do for him now.

It was July, 1974. I had just returned home in NJ from a canoe trip to Moose River region in Maine. Back home & back to the "summer job". I was about to pick up the phone to contact my usual summer employer when a yellow Corvette pulled in the dirve. Bob was driving. After the usual greetings, joshings and small talk, Bob asked if I would like to accompany him on a cross courntry ride in the 'Vette on his way to USAFA.
Knowing that my brother, a former USMC fighter pilot, now also resided in Colorado (and who had also offered me a summer job in the Rockies as well as a delayed birthday present of a sharp new kayak), Bob figured it was "win-win" for us both. "Route 66 Redux" with 2 footloose guys driving that 'Vette cross country to our ultimate desitnation...on interstates instead of "The Mother Road".
Given the fact that the eventual love of my life (and future wife) was helping family in western PA. and our plan was to camp and/or crash at friends and relatives along the way, I was in!
With only the small rack on the rear of the 'Vette we packed light and headed west via I-78. Being the days before cell phones or any other source of music, top 40 AM/FM radio was our "third wheel" friend, though multiple repeats of "Rock the Boat" caused some extreme intestinal discomfort by the time he hit the far reaches of the PA Turnpike!... Or was it that chili dog near Pittsburgh?
There are multiple anecdotes, but I will only relate a truncated version of The Fuel Tank Fable. We had reached New Concord, OH, home of Muskingum College and Astonaut/Senator John Glenn. Without too many details, suffice to say that whilst "stretching out" a bit on US 40 (The National Road), we flew through a railroad crossing with a distinct metallic bump that successfully punctured the fuel tank on the 'Vette!
Encountering the local Chevy mechanic who presented with the news that he could order a new tank ($$$), but with deliveries and labor, "Probly be a week, I reckon." Or we could pick one up in Zanesville...or, "Y'all could go down to the auto parts store, get some o' that new epoxy putty and just stick it up that ol' hole like some bubble gum! Give 'er time ta dry and you could make to El Paso!". Bingo! A buck and a half and 24 hours later we were on our way again. Admittedly, we made frequent checks while fueling along the way and kept an extra package of epoxy at hand. Bob ordered a new tank to be ready in Colorado Springs and he dropped me off in Estes Park and tooled on south to a rendevous with his parents in New Mexico and USAFA a few days later.
I can only finish with the previous day as we crossed Nebraska on I-80, the Platte Rive on our right. Bob was driving and I dozed off to the local grain reports droning. When I awoke, I swore I saw the purple mountains majesty in the distance. "Are those the Rockies?," I asked. "Nope," Bob replied, "That's just the horizon, Rob. We're still in Nebraska. It's just the horizon."
Well, neither of us are still in Nebraksa, the Rockies remain, the big old sky stretches wide above, and my good old road and sky pal has gone beyond the horizon; he's gone Home.

Dear family/friends of Bob,
You all know him as a Major General -- I simply know him as BOB, the love of Tara's life. Tara and I were cub reporters together in Utica. I've known her for more than 30 years....she was in our wedding. I did the make up for her wedding. I've never seen her happier than when she was with Bob. Bob was at my house the night before leaving for Arizona. After Tara's passing he would make the trek to our tavern, in Utica, to have a quick bite to eat and a visit with my husband and I. We will miss both of them ... and wish them eternal bliss in the love of the Lord.

The General has always occupied a special place in my heart. I call him my military dad. I remember when he first came to the unit. He really did care about his people. No matter when I saw him, he always asked how things were going for me. When I applied for commissioning, he was proud to sign and approve my packet. I was honored to do his retirement ceremony, for which he gave me a hug afterwards. It is hard to believe he is gone. He has made such a huge impact on my life. He may be gone, but he leaves behind a wonderful legacy of leadership and care.

I was so sorry to learn about Major General Knauff's death. When I worked at Lockheed Martin and he was the commander of the 174th in Syracuse, the company and the Air National Guard worked together to collect and transport toys and clothes for the Salvation Army gift distribution every December. I would see then Commander Knauff at the toy collection and then working hard on distribution day at the OnCenter. He was always good humored, approachable and generous with his time. He cared about everyone. Thank goodness we had this special human being with us as long as we did. God's peace, Major General Knauff. I extend my deepest sympathy to his family.

We did not know Bob for very long, a few years, not nearly long enough. But I think Rose captured what we, Bob, I and all glider pilots share in this short story:
" Rose wrote: "The first time you set foot in Aguila Arizona some people say "What would anybody be doing here? " Unless you're a glider pilot...... it is heaven for them. It's a quiet desert, where no one knows, who you are, where you've been and nobody really cares. The best thermals and plenty of air space to get as high as you can, go as as fast you want. Fly the entire day. I think that's what attracted people like Bob to Aguila. Bob was a decorated 25 yr retired Airforce Major General. I think it was a getaway for him. A getaway from his sadness after losing his wife of cancer 6 months earlier. Some people suggest Cliff not to fly anymore, my answer to that, is, you can't take wings off of a pilot. Cliff says flying is an unforgiving sport, some people make mistakes, or things go wrong and they recover quickly in the air. But for some there is no recovery. We never know who or when, if ever, but if they don't recover, they died loving what they do. Why would these pilots from all walks of life, take the risk?, They work very hard preparing for their flights. It's hot, windy, and dusty. They push the giant glider from its place of tie downs to the runway. But first they need to pull it out of the large trailer and assemble. Add the tail and the wings to the fuselage, put the clear canopy carefully on top. Then it's time to give her a bath. They wipe it clean from all specks of dirt or dust. They seem to enjoy every minute of it. The sun beating down on them waiting for their turn for take off. They know in a few minutes they will be right where they want to be..."

I am grieving with sadness that I haven't felt in a long time for someone that God used so effectively in my life for the better part of 18 years... Major General Robert Knauff. Like a lot of you that worked closely with him, my sadness lingers in my heart for 'such a man as this'. Bob Knauff was a providential instrument that helped me see and understand myself as I should as a person. As a direct report to him for most of my service at the 174th, we met in his office and many times ended up discussing each others relationship with God in Christ Jesus. The comfort I do feel is his death, is that not only was he an outstanding Air Force Officer, he was a friend and brother in Christ and his spirit rejoices in peace with his Lord and Savior. The Bible says "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord". This is true peace. As strong supporter of unit members families, Gen Knauff celebrated with my wife and I at the birth of each of our children. Always supportive in difficult times...putting others before himself...and a leader extraordinaire. You blessed my life Robert Knauff. I am forever thankful.

I was very sad to hear of Bob's death. Bob, Christy and I are first cousins. Their family lived in California and our family lived in Pittsburgh so we didn't get to see much of each other. I think I could count the number of times we saw each other on one hand. In 1962 Mom and I went to Summit NJ to visit the Knauff family for about a week. The most important memory I have of that visit was the time the three of us lit the fireplace and forgot to open the damper. The house filled with smoke but the good news was we didn't burn down the house. We did get into lots of trouble. The next time Bob and I met was in Vero Beach Florida at our grandmother's house in 1982. By that time Bob was married to his first wife and I was married and had two kids. We all went out to lunch together. When it came time to say goodbye, I said to Bob "Well, I'll guess I'll see you again in another 20 years". That never happened although we talked on the phone maybe once since, around the time Bob's first wife passed. I haven't seen Christy since 1962 when we were both in 7th grade. I have many regrets that I didn't do a better job of staying in touch. Bob was a true leader and we all should be very thankful for the service that he gave to our nation. RIP my cousin. I was very saddened to hear of Bob's passing. Bob was a great aviator, officer, and leader, and a good guy, too. I first met Bob and flew OV-10s with him in the USAF in 1983 - much later, I used to run into Bob regularly at Oshkosh where we both had flown in our RV's, but it had been a few years now since I last saw him. Always had a super (and sarcastic) attitude and sense of humor - we will miss him! "Tribute to the Fighter Pilot" … “So here’s a nickel on the grass to you, my friend, and your spirit, enthusiasm, sacrifice and courage - but most of all to your friendship. Your’s is a dying breed and when you are gone, the world will be a lesser place.”

I was so profoundly sad to hear the news of Gen Knauff's death. He was a great leader, a great mentor, and a friend. i learned much of what it means to be a good officer and leader from his example. He had a talent for bringing the best out of people, and cared deeply about the men and women he commanded. And despite his serious demeanor, he had a great sense of humor, with an ability to ensure you never took yourself too seriously.
