John D. Haley, 67, of Cazenovia died Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital. John was a career firefighter. He began in 1967 when we joined the Cazenovia Fire Department of which he later served as Chief from 1987-1989. In 1970 he was hired as a paid professional firefighter/paramedic for the DeWitt Fire District retiring in 1990. John was a 32+ year member of the Madison County Firemen's Association in which he held many positions one of which was President. His love for his County led him to the position of Madison County Fire Coordinator, a position which he held for 25 years. In 1979 John joined the CNY Firemen's Association representing 20 counties and worked on many committees learning and educating firefighters in the CNY area. He was elected President of Central in 1993 serving a two year term until 1994 when he was awarded a life membership in the CNY Firemen's Association. He was a 40+ year member of FASNY where he served as SGT of Arms from 2000-2010 and also aided in informing and educating firefighters throughout the State of New York. He was also a member of the NYS Association of Fire Chiefs and was a Charter Member of Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
John was a Zoning Officer for the Village of Cazenovia for 10 years and member of the Civic Club. He was also very active in the Chamber of Commerce and the Cazenovia Car Club.
John is survived by his wife of 32 years, Pat; his daughter Tammy (Jeff) Barrett; his sister Anne (John) Keiser; step-son Rob (Anne) Woollis; two nephews and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Monday at St. James Church, 6 Green Street in Cazenovia. The Rite of Committal will be in St. James Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 1-4pm at the Tait Funeral Home, Inc., 2333 Fenner Road in Cazenovia with a Firematic Service at 4:30pm.
