My condolences to the Wilbur family. Gary was my PE instructor at Cazenovia high school. He instilled good values and hard work. I respected him and have a funny story to tell. Gary once wacked me on the butt with a clip board in the locker room for a disciplinary measure for something I said or did. To this day, I can' t recall what I did, but I'm sure I deserved it and accepted my punishment. Makes me laugh now as a fond memory of him.

Sorry I am so late hearing of Gary's passing. The best compliment I can give Gary is that due to his influence on my life, I have gone on to motivate thousands of young people in my 30+ years of Teaching Physical Education and coaching Football, weighlifting and Track. My father was never really in my life and like many of my coaches at Cazenovia Gary filled a void in my life. He was so motivating, He had a way of making you want to please him without pressuring you. His dedication to excellence was contagious. As a head football coach at Churchville Chili HS in Rochester NY I was fortunate to have two other Cazenovian's on my coaching staff (Dan Geiger & Dennis Pynn) we would all talk about our coaches and all agreed he was the best PE teacher ever and just an outstanding coach, person and mentor of you men. They don't make them like Gary any more!!! he is remembered and loved and we will keep his beautiful wife and family in our prayers. Paul Dick

To the Wilbur family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Coach Wilbur had a profound impact on my life, but I suspect he never knew that. He was my teacher, my coach, and though its been many years since I last saw him, I hope he would've considered me his friend. Coach Wilbur tried, but could not make me the baseball player I wanted to be. My lack of talent and fragile knees were more than even he could overcome. However, with his efforts and persistence he showed me a great example of what it means to be dedicated to your profession, how to invest in the people that depend on you, and how a good and decent man acts. Like you, I am comforted by his memory but mourn his loss.

To Gary's Family,
I was saddened to get the news of Gary's death. We spent some good times together, especially as kids. He came over from Dorwin Ave to our house on Oakley Drive to play basketball at what was just about the only hoop in the neighborhood. From the beginning, he was good -- small but fast and savvy. One cold day, I went in the house early. He stayed on for a few more shots. I was in the basement by the window that looked up and out at the driveway as he went past. I was learning how to swear, and so, shouted out, "So long, Lefty, you 'blank-of-a-blank!" (jokingly, not angrily) only to see my Dad looking down from the top of the stairs! Trouble!
Lefty and I also had a bit of a lark on opening day of the Chiefs' baseball season. With our parents' permission, we cut class (sixth grade at Meachem Elementary) and went to the ballgame. The next day, Miss Baker asked us to stay after class. We were scared! She gave us a few seconds of a scowl, then smiled and asked us if we'd enjoyed the ballgame. Boy, were we relieved.
We played hockey together on the frozen ponds by Onondaga Creek, near his house (I think we also played Pewee Hockey together at the War Memorial, but that's a bit vague). What I do know is that we played together on Valley High's baseball team. If there was one thing our coach, Walt Bohlen, hated, it was failure to lay down a good bunt. Lefty didn't have to worry -- he was good at everything. I wasn't, and lived in fear of having to bunt.
He was more than a fine athlete, he was a fine person, quiet and never boastful. I was lucky to have him as a teammate, a classmate, and a friend.

For years, every summer but this one, I would head back to Caz to visit with family and one friend in particular...no visit was ever complete without a stop to see Coach Wilbur and Rosalea. They always made me and my girls feel completely at ease on the back deck by the stream, having perfect lemonade and perfect conversation. He has been a good friend for around 45 years, and leaves an empty spot in all of my Cazenovia memories.
