We move on as time passes or circumstances chage, and sometimes that means leaving "until later" people we love. That was what happened with Marilyn and me. Last year I made small attempts to seek her out, but then I see she had already died. In a specific time period, we were such close friends. Today I thought about her, went online and found this surprising news of her death. Sadness has hit me hard. A scholar in her own rights and style, perceptive and wise, devoted and loving, open to growth, a supporter, a steady soul. Doreen

Marilyn and I met at Classic Bookshop in NYC on July 5th, 1977. I first saw her at 9:10am and first spoke to her at 9:20am. For me it was love at first sight. She was incredibly beautiful. As I got to know her better I realized that she was also extremely intelligent, well read and knowledgeable about classical music, opera, the arts (in general) and the most fun person I had ever met.
Without Marilyn my life would have been a shambles. She saved me from a miserable existence and did so right to the very end.
We were married on November 10th, 1979 at Corpus Christi Church in NYC.
It is nearly two weeks since her death and contemplating the thought of life without her is so very, very unbearable.
I will love Marilyn for ever and ever.

Not too long ago these two won a competition from the Salt City Market for best couple in front of the heart.
My fondest memories are sharing a glass of wine and a good meal with Marilyn. Just us two ladies in a sea of testosterone at the family gatherings. We talked about our makeup, jewelry, music and cats. I miss you and will never forget you.

Dearest Mullen, I met you 27 years ago... when I saw your beautiful smile, when you brought Turkish food to 425 Riverside Drive, to Marion, your Angel Mother... I loved you right there and then immediately... You are the person who caused me to love opera, taught me a lot about art, classical music, books, movies, as well as kindness, wittiness, childlike playfulness, how to see the funny side of things and having a heart filled with love and kindness... You never even once hurt my feelings, never missed my birthdays... Always took the time for sending me beautiful cards and gifts... I will never forget my 30th Birthday with you, David and Larry…I loved how you always called me sweetheart or darling with full of love... I loved your laughter filling the room with warmth and caused us to laugh even more... Like Marion, your kind and loving heart always made me feel home... Like Marion, I could always find comfort in your loving smiles without uttering a word, assuring that I have a loving soul next to me...
As Rumi wrote "Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul there is no such thing as separation."
I will love you with my heart and soul forever Mullen….
I LOVE YOU MULLEN!!! AND I KNOW YOU REPLY "I LOVE YOU TOO SWEETHEART!"
With Love Forever...
Emel

Our good friend Paula Jeannet sent me this poem and I think it is incredibly beautiful and I know Marilyn would have loved it also.
VITAE SUMMA BREVIS SPEM NOS VETAT INCOHARE LONGAM
(The brief sum of life forbids us the hope of enduring long – Horace)
They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,
Love and desire and hate:
I think they have no portion in us after
We pass the gate.
They are not long, the days of wine and roses:
Out of a misty dream
Our path emerges for a while, then closes
Within a dream.

Dearest Marilyn,
Thought this would be impossible to write, but it isn’t. I imagined you and decades of memories tumbled out. I just don’t know how to cut them down to a few. They all demand attention before I can go on, as vivid now as they were then.
New York the first time we met, your apartment, all those country songs you played, Dolly Parton, Crystal Gayle. Trying to get me into classical music and opera. That time you got me to go to church – that was a miracle! That summer in Lancaster and David’s peach wine. That Christmas when we all first met. New Jersey. Those wonderful trips the four of us did over the years – New York, Boston, Montreal, Philadelphia.
Those memories got their way. Back to what I had wanted to say. You were and are among our dearest friends. Both Linda and I will miss you, but we will have you in our hearts and minds.
I don’t know whether this is a farewell or just an au revoir. I’ll go with the French. They always seem to say it best without getting caught up in silly theological controversies.
We send our love to you and David.

Marilyn and I were each other’s best friend for 69 years. She was kind, gentle, fun, generous, gracious, graceful and beautiful. She had an awesome knowledge and appreciation of the arts, especially literature and music. She loved animals, especially cats and horses. She was a curious and attentive listener, a truly special attribute. She loved selflessly and unconditionally. It is painful to think that she is no longer in the world. She enriched my life immeasurably. Of course she will live in the hearts and memories of all who knew and loved her. We were blessed.
